Dear Kindergarten Families,
During the month of September, all Kindergarten teachers participated in training to learn how to use a new formative assessment tool called Teaching Strategies GOLD. Newton, like many districts across the state, is part of an initiative called the Massachusetts Kindergarten Entry Assessment (MKEA). This is a collaboration of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), and is part of the federal Race to the Top/Early Learning Challenge Grant.
Teaching Strategies GOLD uses observational data, collected over time, to monitor students’ approaches to learning and play as well as social and emotional skills. This year, teachers will be collecting data in the fall and again in the spring to measure students’ growth in two domains: social/emotional (regulates emotions and behaviors; establishes and sustains positive relationships; and participates cooperatively and constructively in group situations) and cognitive (demonstrates positive approaches to learning; remembers and connects experiences; uses classification skills; and uses symbols to represent something that is not present). We are looking forward to join with colleagues across the state in this initiative to ensure that all students have a successful kindergarten experience, and look forward to sharing our work with you as the year progresses.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Cynthia Paris Jefferies, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education at 617-559-6105 or Mary Eich, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning at 617-559-6125.
If you plan to signup your kindergarten student for spring Memorial Spaulding Kindergarten soccer please do it now. Teams are filling-up fast and we plan to get the league started on Saturday April 7th. You can access a form online here or email me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org and I can send you an application.
If you can not send your application in on time please let me know of your intentions to sign-up your player (via email to email@example.com) so I can include them now on a team and you can give me your application on the first day of play. Forms can be left in the front hall mail boxes at school (one should be labelled “Soccer”.) Or drop a form off at my house at 203 Greenwood Street in Newton.

Kindergarten Families- Welcome to Memorial-Spaulding and the ASCA program!
This year our After School Creative Arts program, (ASCA), is offering lots of fun and educational programs for Kindergartners. Your children should have brought home a blue flyer which lists classes that are available to them. There are many classes that your children might enjoy, such as animal detectives, hip-hop, karate, art, dodgeball and yoga. We would like to highlight two classes in particular. The first is the Spanish class that will be offered only to Kindgergartners and will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 12:30. The other fun program that ASCA will be offering is called the “Boston Science Museum- Travel Program”. A staff member of the Science museum comes to the school and offers various educational exhibits which are sure to keep the kids excited and and engaged. We hope you will check all of our classes out on our website- www.memorialspauldingasca.com!
ASCA is a very fun and successful program run by Memorial-Spaulding parents who volunteer. The ASCA volunteers help the kids transition from their classrooms to their afterschool programs to make this run smoothly. And because the children go straight from their classrooms at the end of the day, to their ASCA classes, YOU don’t need to drive all over the place!
We hope to see you there!
