Lockdown Practice Drill

Dear Memorial-Spaulding Families,

To be sure students and staff are prepared for emergency situations, we hold fire drills and lockdown drills. Thursday morning, March 12th we announced to students that we were conducting a Lockdown Practice. The drill went smoothly. As with all drills, we learn from each experience in order to refine and improve our procedures.

In a Lockdown situation, teachers immediately gather any children from the hall into their room, lock their doors, pull down shades that are on doors and windows, and guide students to a corner of the room away from doors and windows. Everyone is expected to be as quiet as possible throughout such drills.   Newton police officers also participate in the drill.  At the drill there were several Newton Police officers who offered additional feedback.  As part of the drill, custodians and police officers check to be sure doors are locked, shades are in place and so on.    Overall, our process is sound and we will make some small adjustments based on the team’s feedback.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

Lisa
