Dear Memorial Spaulding families:

Thank you for your participation at the principal search meeting on Friday, December18.  As Superintendent David Fleishman noted, the consistently high turnout at our PTOmeetings, coffees, and events is a true testament to the level of engagement of ourfamilies and underscores how Memorial Spaulding parents value the education of ourchildren.

At the meeting, Dr. Fleishman outlined the process for finding a new principal atMemorial Spaulding.  We’d like to review this plan so that parents will know how and when they can be involved in the process, if they so wish.

A Selection Advisory Committee will be formed in December, which will include 3 parents, 4 teachers, a Newton Public School principal, and other school administrators.  The names of the SAC representatives will be submitted to the HR office by January 15th. The committee will meet on January 25 from 3-4:30PM to review resumes and develop interview questions, and on February 8th and 9th to interview candidates.  The committee will select 6-8 semi-finalists for further consideration.

On February 23rd and 25th, semi-finalist candidates will visit another elementaryschool in Newton where they will be assessed on their knowledge of classroom instruction and ability to reflect on complex leadership situations.  Based on this evaluation, 1-3 finalists will be selected.

During the week of March 14th, each finalist will visit Memorial Spaulding for a day.  The visits will include meetings with teachers, a large group meeting open to ALL parents, and a smaller group meeting with 6-8 parents.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and see how they respond.

Finally, reference and background checks will be completed.

If you are interested in being considered for the Selection Advisory Committee, or the small group meeting with the finalists, please fill out this Google Doc Form by January 8th.

Once we hear from all interested parties, we will be in touch with those individuals about next steps.

Superintendent David Fleishman is optimistic that we will have a named Principal for the 2016-17 school year by March 21st.  We are fortunate to be starting the search process early and will be able to draw strong candidates.  Memorial Spaulding is a very desirable school given the engagement of the families and the diversity of the students.

At any time, please do not hesitate to email if you have questions.

Thank you,

The Memorial Spaulding PTO Board
